History

The University of Western Macedonia was founded with the founding act no. 92/2003. Since 1/1/2004 the Departments of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki that used to reside in the city of Florina (Primary Education, Early Childhood Education and Balkan Studies) and the city of Kozani (Energy Resources Management Engineering) are included in the new university. Today, the university has 5 Departments, 3 in Florina and 2 in Kozani.

The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering (proposal of the late Professor S. Orfanoydakis in the meeting of the Governing Board with a team of experts in Nymfaio) was founded in 2005 with the Official Gazette Issue A' 192/2005 and is based in the city of Kozani (seat of the University). The educational operation and the admission of the first students began in the academic year 2005 - 2006.

The chairman of the Department is Associate Professor Constantinos Stergiou. In the past, Professors Christos Massalas, Ioannis Demetropoulos, Ioannis Manolopoulos, Konstantinos Margaritis, Theodoros Chatzipantelis, Nikolaos Phahantidis and Theodoros Theodoulidis have also been chairmen.

The graduated engineers of the Department are registered in the specialty of Electronic Engineers of the Technical Chamber of Greece (decision of the Governing Board of the Technical Chamber of Greece during the regular meeting of July 12, 2011).
